Jets QB Kellen Clemens outplayed Chad Pennington for the second straight day Thursday.

It's merely OTAs in May, but the New York papers are noting Clemens' evident improvement. Early indications give him a leg up on Pennington for the Jets' starting quarterback job, but Clemens is bound to look better in shorts. His problems have come because of a lack of poise in the pocket.

Jets' OLB Bryan Thomas reiterated Thursday that he "slacked off" last season on the heels of a career year in 2006.

It's no coincidence that Thomas' incredibly candid self-assessment occurred after the team signed free agent Calvin Pace and drafted Vernon Gholston with the sixth overall pick. Thomas realizes this is a make-or-break season, and he no longer has the luxury of job security.

You have to wonder if he really did outplay Chad because of the latest comments made by Jets officials. (Them wanting Kellen to win the job)

If he did, no real surprise. Chad's arm is gone by now, so unless they competition was only handing off, or maybe reading defenses, Clemens ought to win. I'm sure the coaches there are smart enough to realize you can't win regularly throwing only screen passes...

Kellen needs to win this competition, but don't think they won't name Chad the starter if he doesn't.

I really like Chad. He is a smart, stand up, talented and good quarterback who was hurt from being break a few times to the shoulder.

I think the Jets have set up this team to be a QB plug and play. They put the money into the offensive line for the running game and defensive line to keep the score low.

To me, that actually works in both Chad and Kellen's favor.

For Chad, a good line, running game and pass catching TE means he can do what he does best which is to manage the game, move the chains and keep the game close.

For Kellen, a rookie QB, a good running game and more protection will help him tremendously.

Either way, all the moves point to taking as much as possible AWAY from the QB and in that way, letting either succeed.

Having said that, I think it is Kellen's job to lose. Chad lost the job last year and Kellen had moments to build on. This is the year we figure out if he is the QB for us.

The problem with Pennington is his onfield smarts always offset some of his troubles with his arm strength. Even before the injuries his arm was nothing to write home about, but especially since mid-2004 he has had to rely on his head more so than his arm. Unfortunately for Chad in 2007 he started to make mistake after mistake after mistake. If he is now losing some of his Football intelligence, to add onto a deteriating arm, it doesn't make for a good combination for the fields most important player.

Positive: Kellen appears to be playing a little better then Chad right now.

Negative: Kellen isn't playing head and shoulders better then Chad right now.

Clemens better step it up and quick...he's going into his 3rd season now and if he can't turn the corner then he's going to land in the career back-up / CFL category. Pennington hasn't played well for years now and if the drafted air apparent can't take the starting job from him after 3 seasons then it's time to start looking for the guy who can.
