I need some anime fans to explain why they like it. If its just for the art of it, no problem, I get that. But I get nothing else about it. What am I missing?

Let me give this a shot:
Why does anyone like anything? Why do I love to read? Play video games? Anything?
It's just a personal preference for some people. Also you say anime like they are all the same, but there are as many different types as there are regular American cartoons. People like anime because they can....pretty much.

Well of course, people like different things. But generally there are reasons, for why someone likes something. Which is what I'm trying to find out. What is appealing about it?
As for your different types thing, again, I don't see it. To me there's 4 types with slight moderations on those, here and there: Action, Bizarre, Porn, Kids. I've never seen an anime that doesn't fit into one or a couple of those categories.

Actually I never understood anime for a long time either. I had a friend have me watch Full Metal Alchemist and I really started to like it. It just depends on the type if I like it. The best Anime in my opinion is just now being dubbed in english. Thats death note.
Death Note I just like becuase it's really interesting storyline in my opinion. About a bright young student that gets a hold of a book that he can kill anyone he wants with. Well he decides to use it to kill all criminals and eventually rule the world by making it a better place. Well a investigator only known as L starts going after him. It turns to a battle of wits. I think its very interesting.
There is a lot of anime I do not like though.

In our cartoons aren't there pretty much just Superhero, action, funny, and little kids?
I'm not really a huge anime fan, but I can see why people like it anyway.

I don't understand why people buy all the merchandise and crap but Anime isn't bad. But there are alot of crappy Anime.
The only thing I can recommend is Code Geass and Claymore ATM.

True but some of the merchandise is god awful. You know like the stuff Hot Topic sells
My old boss had a Dragonball-Z tat on his bicep. Dude was pretty hip hop. You'd never guess he was obsessed.
I don't get it either.

I dunno in HS some of my friends thought Dragon Ball Z was the ****. My friend Cleveland (looks like a shorter version of 50 cent) thought it was bad ass. Never understood why.
Lets face it Ive watched it before but looking back on it was horrible. TO each of their own I guess.

Code is actually really good. You'll notice some DN in CG. Yeah FMA wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Maybe I can shed some light on this. People watch anime, like any other visual picture 'artform' (sitcom, chik flik, comic book, porn) for one of three reasons- character(s), story, entertainment. It's the same as the dad who watches Looney Tunes on Sat. mornings with his kids (entertainment), the geek who SWEARS that Weapon X Wolverine is better than Ultimate X-Men Wolverine (character), or the 'movie snob' who looks on in disgust at someone who says that they "...just don't 'get' Fellini." (story)
Most watch/read it for the story and characters because they are full of archetypes, action, embarrassing moments, witty dialogue and, yes, fluff. I think the reason people become so attached to it ('otaku' they call it) is that most of the time, one is getting a (sometimes) novel-worthy adult* story in a cartoon. That is an unusual thing for someone who has grown up with Looney Tunes and Disney their entire life. And people get hooked. They have their favorite authors and series, characters they identify with, and best of all, (unlike soaps and movies) there are NO bad actors.:hi5:
I hope that clears some of it up for you Fin...if you have any more questions, feel free to ask- I was an English/Asian Studies major in a previous life.
*And by 'adult' I mean mature...not nekkid, you perv:wink2::lol:

Well, when you remove your expectations of sanity and possibility, then Anime is a great thing to watch. Some anime, I'll have to admit, don't appeal to me. But there are many others I like, simply because of the plot (Blood+, Yu-Gi-Oh! [The none dubbed, pre-4Kids version), or the subject that is related to it (Eyeshield 21, football anime, or Initial D, street racing).
